MODULE 4 - Evaluating The Web

Unfortunately I can't access the tutorial for this task...the message I keep receiving states that the page has moved but there is no forward to it OR it has been deleted. So, I'm just going to type the information requested in the curriculum in a way that I think I would understand if reading about a source/website for the first time.

Source/site: ampcu.com.au

Reliability of the source: As this is straight from the horses mouth, so to speak, I would judge this to be the most reliable of sources when requiring information about the AMP Credit Union.

Main purpose: This site's main purpose is to provide most if not all banking needs for both members and investigators of the AMP Credit Union. This includes online banking.

MODULE 4 - Organising Search Information

My usual method of organising search information is through 'Favourites'. I usually create a temporary folder with the title of my search and then 'add to my favourites' all the relevant websites. I find this method very easy to add to and to access once saved. It's also very easy to delete once I've finished with those chosen sites. Even after my first experience with Bookmark Buddy which I donwloaded for previous tasks, I still perfer to use 'Favourites'.

MODULE 4 - Boolean Searching Task

I found this task very interesting. Had I read about it before I completed the previous search for the AMP Credit Union, I would have changed my search criteria. But I didn't want to waste any time as I'm so far behind as it is.

Google - I tried using the Boolean NOT search eg; AMP Credit Union not Credit Union and actually got more hits! The previous amount was about 304,000 and the new amount was 364,000. So I tried it another way. I typed in AMP not Credit Union to see what would happen. This cut the hits down to 268,000 but the very first hit was still for the AMP Credit Union.

Copernic - I did the same here as I did with Google but this time I received a surprising message; "You do not have to use Boolean operators (or, and) since Copernic Agent automatically manages them." With this search, AMP not Credit Union, there were only 61 hits and 3 of the first 5 had changed.

Differences - The biggest difference was obviously the number of hits. Google had 304,000 and Copernic only had 68. The other major difference was what the first hits were. Google was dead on with the AMP Credit Union website whereas the other one had an unrealated site that only had AMP Shares to sell. However, rather than sift through 300,000 odd hits, Copernic's 68 was more efficient and would be much more quicker and the AMP website was in the first 5 hits.

MODULE 4 - Tools & Plug-ins

I have many of the listed programs already installed on my PC but I had never heard of Copernica, Bookmark Buddy or Page Sucker so I downloaded all three.

Copernica - Love this software, never knew it existed until now. My first search was Plato and

Copernica retrieved information from 12 different search engines from AltaVista to Yahoo and even numbered how many items were available on each. This is much quicker than going into different search engines individually.

Bookmark Buddy - I have so many "favourties" listed that it's a wonder I haven't come across

Bookmark Buddy before. Can't wait to add all my lists when I have more time. This will also be a big time saver and make it much easier to locate favourite sites.

Page Sucker - Wow! I had no idea you could bring sites to your hard drive to read offline!

MODULE 3 - Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is more user friendly for those who are technically challenged. A good example of this is Wikipedia. You don't have to use HTML and more than one person can edit or add to the site. The downside to these types of websites is the uncertainty of the quality of the information provided.

The new Web 2.0 technology may enable more user input from ordinary internet users who know nothing about HTML, therefore opening the internet up to even more of the world's population.

The main differences: Well, I think Web 2.0 is more interactive, easier to update and change whereas with HTML a site has to be maintained to be updated by, ususally one individual or company.

MODULE 3 - Blogging

I love blogging! It's so instant, easy, fun and it can be used for so many different things eg;

Excellent as a journal/journey as we have used it throughout this unit; to log our experiences.
I have also read a few personal blogs that keep friends and family updated on one's life.
You can start up a blog for just one theme or idea and receive feedback from all over the world with different opinions and ideas etc.
Blogs can also be great for news, upcoming events, dates of events etc

Best of all, anyone can blog!!!

MODULE 3 - FTP

Took me ages to work out how to get my web site uploaded to the Curtin Uni space provided for students. Very difficult to try it on my own...due to illness I've been held up and so now I don't have the benefit of help from other students.

Therefore, my site is not and will not be appearing on the Curtin Uni website. It's very frustrating because right up until the actual viewing or accessing of the site, I think I've done everything right. I installed Core FTP Lite and VPN. I uploaded my files, did everything the curriculum said to do but still no joy. I'll just have to go on without it...as I said, I'm already too far behind to waste any more time on it.

MODULE 3 - Legal Issues

Would you be in breach of copyright if you put the Curtin logo at the top of your web page for an assignment? This information may be difficult to find so be prepared for a search and some independent thought!

Oh my gosh! After about a day of searching the Curtin Uni website, I finally figured I'd just Google "Curtin Uni Policies" which took all of about 2 seconds! First one on the list at; http://www.policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/viewpolicy.cfm?id=959f55ad-fec2-11dc-b6c5-253dc30d60f2. At the bottom of the page there is a downloadable pdf file on use of the Curtin logo.

As was stated in the curriculum, this question was very difficult to answer and the only info I could locate is the following section, directly quoted from the uni website;

4.5 AUTHORISATION AND RELEASE OF THE LOGO

4.5.1 The logo as a registered trademark is protected from unauthorised use.

4.5.2 The logo may only be released for use by another agency, upon approval by University

Marketing.

4.5.3 External requests for the use of the logo must be addressed to University Marketing in

writing. In making a case the applicant for the use of the logo must state: the purpose of the use of the logo; the proposed format of the use of the logo; and the date(s) or periods when the logo will be used.

4.5.4 Permission to use the logo is usually granted within two days of the request being received

by University Marketing.

4.5.6 University Marketing must sight and approve the artwork where the logo is to be applied. Approval or further requests for alteration are usually granted within two days of the artwork being received by University Marketing.

I guess my answer to this question would be; only if I hadn't sought and received approval in writing.

MODULE 3 - HTML

Record any difficulties you encountered with these exercises. Record your thoughts about html - do you feel a sense of achievement? What are the differences between html and blogging? What do you like best?

Firstly I have to say that Joe Barta's online tutorial was not only very easy to follow, it was fun too!

Difficulties: There were many! Most of them were just fiddly things that I had to mess around with to get them right and it was always down to my own user error. It took me two days to get one title centred and I still don't know why.

The most difficult part was the actual uploading onto WebCT but, thanks once again to my fellow students, it didn't take long to work out.

My design had 11 pictures but they didn't appear on my uploaded presentation. Back to the trusty discussion boards and the advise of yet more of my fellow students and Cynthia who reminded me that the pictures had to actually be uploaded too, dah!

Uploaded all the pics one by one to find that only some of them were appearing. Arggg...I really didn't want to ask for help yet again so I went on an investigation. I compared the file names of the pictures that could be seen with that of those that couldn't and discovered, to my surprise, that the file extensions on the working pictures were all uppercase but were lowercase on those that didn't work. I had no idea that size mattered! After changing all file names to match, my pictures appeared. Whew...relief at not having to ask for more help.

My Thoughts On HTML: I was really excited that we were moving onto web pages, it's something I've always wanted to learn but I had no idea what goes into making one. HTML can very confusing for new users, it actually reminded me a lot of macro codes. I never expected it to be so time consuming and fiddly. Not to mention frustrating when you're certain you've got everything exactly where it should be but nothing is working! Of course, once you go through there will be one little squiggle out of place, causing all the problems. I love it! I had the biggest sense of achievement...just to see the end result made me so happy. I did it! I designed a web site!

HTML and Blogging Differences: Blogging is much easier and more quickly accessible. All you have to do is log onto a blogging site, load a template (already designed for you) and type away. No codes, no fiddling; you don't even have to design anything if you don't want to. HTML is very fiddly and time consuming and you have to upload everything and then have it approved but it is worth it. I don't have a preference, I like both mediums for different uses.

This module has been one of the most enjoyable so far.

MODULE 2 - Chat

Not having much experience with any chat programmes, I signed up with Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and later, Pidgin. After chatting several times with different groups of my fellow students I came to the following conclusions:

The majority prefer MSN and believe that it's more stable and more reliable when using micropones and cameras etc, next came Pidgin and then ICQ and Yahoo. Many people agreed that they get thrown out of Yahoo too often.
Pidgin allows you to see all of your contacts online no matter which chat they use.
I like MSN for variety and reliability eg: sending pics or music etc. Yahoo for environment, Pidgin for accessibility to contacts and ICQ for basic chatting needs.
I learned a little about IMVU. Apparently it's a 3D chat environment and it's good for better interaction.
Skype also seemed to be popular but I don't know much about it yet other than it is good for cheap phone calls and you can use it on Yahoo.

I was fascinated with all these chat spaces and the things they can do, basically all the same if you just want to chat. Excellent because everything is instant, it's almost like talking to face to face, even more so if you have webcam.

The internet, email, instant messaging...they really have opened up a whole new way of communicating. I can see how it can impact both positively and negatively on our society. On the plus side, you can converse with people all around the world, meet new people all around the world and it's much cheaper than phone calls. It must be amazing for disabled people who can't get out and about much. The down side, you can become very reclusive!

"Soaring" a book by Roger Elwood

Hi, I just read an amazing book by author Roger Elwood. The title is "Soaring" and it is a work of fiction with great imagination. It starts off with 1 sentence on the first page that sets the tone of the whole book. I can't tell you what the sentence is without giving the away the plot. This is a "what if..." type of book that has a "feel good" ending even if first page does throw you a bit.

MODULE 2 - Email Lists

I've just discovered Yahoo Groups and joined my first group; Everything Christmas. Can't wait to see how it all works.

I also joined a Usenet newsgroup which I selected from the link in the curriculum. It's religion: Christian favourite books.

TRIVIA: I loved reading about the 3 students in North Carolina who started the first newsgroup in 1979 so I decided to see what they were all doing now. After googling "Newsgroups originated in North Carolina back in 1979", I found the names Tom Truscott, Jim Ellis & Steve Bellovin.

Steve was the one who wrote the first Netnews program and he is now a professor in the Computer Science dept at Columbia University. Tom Truscott now works as a "software developer at SAS Institute, a Business Intelligence software vendor particularly strong on data analysis". The above site also stated that Jim Ellis worked as an Internet Security Consultant for Sun Microsystems before he passed away in 2001 after battling Lymphoma.

MODULE 2 - Email Tasks

Q1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?

A1. The senders and recipients names and email addresses. The time and date the email was sent and the subject if one is entered.

Q2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email?

A2. cc: Use this to send a copy of your message to someone other than the original recipient. eg; when chairing team meetings at work, I would send an agenda to my team with a request for additional agenda items. I would address the email to the supervisor and cc all adminstration team members. bcc: Use this to send a "blind" copy of your message to someone without other recipients knowing about it. eg; if I had to send an email to a difficult client, I would bcc it to the rest of my team so that they would know to handle this client with due care. reply all: Use this to send a message to every recipient of the original message. eg; After sending the agenda to my team, as above in cc, they would send me a return email and reply all so that the rest of the team received the same email and be prepared.

Q3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by

the receiver?

A3. You can ensure that the recipient has the same or compatible software to that with which the attachment was created. If you are unsure if the recipient has a compatible computer or software, then you can send documents as plain text (ASCII) or as a RTF (rich text file) that is compatible with multiple applications. Sometimes, large files take too long to send or can't be sent at all so we compress or zip them to reduce the size and therefore, the sending time.

Q4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

A4. My ISP offers a free spam filter. Without this filter I would be receiving 10 times the emails I currently receive. Unfortunately some spam still slips through, especially those junk emails with normal/people's names in the sender field. When this happens I add them to my "block senders" list.

Q5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

A5. The ISP spam filter is also beneficial in organising my email storage. It filters out the unwanted emails which would clog my inbox and prevent new messages from being received. The emails that don't get filtered are automatically downloaded to my "Outlook Express" inbox every time I turn on my computer. If I'm away from home (and my pc) then I access my emails through webmail where they stay until I return home and sign onto my pc.

The files in my "filing cabinet" are arranged alphabetically and some have "sub" folders eg; my Uni folder has 4 folders inside for each of my OUA subjects.

What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?

I think the discussion boards are more convenient because you can read straight off them and respond at will. You have to download the email lists to your computer which takes more time and effort.

Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

I found the discussion boards to be more readily accessible and easier to manoeuvre whereas mail lists are ok if you want to make a contribution or share something with others on the list.

I used to work as a telephonist for a paging company, way before emails and in the early days of mobile phones...how far we've come since then. When you think about it, I was just a go-between in the middle of a message, the equivalent of a stop on a traceroute list these days. I use to marvel that someone could call me up, give me a message to type up and send on to a little black box...now we have email...and instant messaging!

MODULE 1 - Internet Tools

Finally, something has gone smoothly for me! Used the suggested link to Network Tools and from there it was fairly easy. Chose 'Trace', entered the Curtin address, copied and pasted the info here in my blog site, answered the questions then went from a trace to a ping to get the average time in ms.

I found it amazing the amount of servers the information had to traverse. When using the internet, I usually just expect everything to just appear when I click on it. I've never really thought about how the information gets to me, just as long as it does! Seeing how everything is routed explains a little about why some sites take longer to access and why there can be problems.

MODULE 1 - Star Wars

Thanks John Warren ! ! ! Finally got my Telnet to show me Star Wars. I have to confess that there was nothing wrong with the program, it was the user!

Watching blinkenlights made me wonder how long took to put it all together, reminded me so much of DOS (which I hated). It also makes me appreciate our fantastic graphics and sounds and the minds that create them!

I remember when the 1st PC's entered Aussie homes, my friend Marina was the first person I knew who had one, our favourite game was "Jones In The Fast Lane" and we went ape over the fabulous new colour graphics, lol.

Technology is a fascinating thing, I mean who thinks up these things?!?!? Makes me want to do some research and find out where it all began but would that be possible? Would anyone know where it all started? WOW! Imagine how amazing it must have been to see your work up and running for the first time. Must be magical.

MODULE 1 - File Transfer Protocol

I downloaded the FTP link that was supplied, read through the tutorial and the getting started section and then installed the FTP on my system. Great all went well.

I then started the evaluation, entered required info ie; user name, password etc and then bam! No connection.

First thought; go to message boards. I discovered that I was not the only one to have this problem so I followed the advice given by Dylan (thanks Dylan!). I discovered I could get the task done by going through Internet Explorer but I was determined to know why it wouldn't work in the FTP site.

Dah!!! I was entering, recall.curtin.edu.au, not ftp://recall.curtin .edu.au ! ! !

Two files appeared on the right hand side as they were supposed to so I chose MSC. (Love the sound effects, by the way. Now that reminded me of Space Invaders!). After scrolling the right I finally found the answer:

CAPITALIZATION

There is so much that's goes on behind the scenes of the internet that I'm sure the average user knows nothing about (and probably doesn't want to!). Kind of like watching tv and never really thinking about what goes on off stage with the unseen crew.

MODULE 1 - Star Wars??

Telnet worked for me just fine yesterday while I searched for Deakin Library but I haven't been able to 'connect' ever since.

I went onto the discussion boards to see if anyone else had the same problem but I'm the only one so I asked for help. The error message I keep getting is:

Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: connection failed

I'll keep trying but I don't want to waist too much time on it.

MODULE 1 - Telnet

After reading through our first task and not knowing anything about Telnet, I read through Wikipedia's description and then went to the message boards to see what my fellow students had to say.

Many were having problems but some flew through this task. First I tried Cynthia's idea of using the browser with no luck and so went back to the message boards. I went to a couple of the sites that other students had recommended but rather than download I decided to do a thorough search on my computer first.

Yippee!!! Hit pay dirt. I went into "my computer" and searched my c drive (XP Home). This brought up Telnet help for both clients and servers which was brief and concise. I also discovered that I was lucky enough to have Microsoft Telnet already installed. Whew!!!

I went in to find that Telnet is very much like DOS which I only barely remember using a hundred years ago! After some fiddling and fumbling I finally worked it out. I'll try and type below what appeared on Telnet.

There's so much about the internet, computers even, that I don't and will probably never know. But it suprised me that, with Telnet, it was like going back to basics. Even with the advanced technology we have today we can still use the internet as it was in the beginning.

TOP FIVE TIPS FOR NEW BLOGGERS

If you're like me and are not quite sure what a blog is then research or Google it. You may want to visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLOG.

Google blogs and look, look, look! There are so many different sites and topics that it's mind boggling. You can get some good inspiration for creating your own layout and you can upload pictures. It can be so much fun and you can always change everything around at a later date.

Save your new blog to your "Favourites" or copy the URL so you can always get back to your site and don't forget your password!

Use a brief but concise title and make your blog as interesting as you can. Try to keep to the topic and instead of going off on tangents, create another blog.
